Ponto Implant

What Are Ponto Implants?

Ponto implants are bone-anchored hearing systems designed for individuals with conductive or mixed hearing loss, or single-sided deafness (SSD). Unlike traditional hearing aids that amplify sound through the ear canal, Ponto implants bypass the ear canal entirely, transmitting sound directly through bone conduction to the inner ear. This makes them an ideal solution for individuals who cannot wear conventional hearing aids due to chronic ear infections, malformations of the ear, or other hearing issues.

At Greater Orange County Ear, Nose, Throat – Head & Neck Surgeons Inc., we specialize in providing Ponto implants for patients in need of an alternative hearing solution. Contact us at (714) 447-4100 to learn more or to schedule a consultation with one of our expert otolaryngologists.

Who Can Benefit from Ponto Implants?

Ponto implants are especially effective for individuals with conductive or mixed hearing loss where sound cannot efficiently travel through the outer or middle ear. This may include patients with conditions such as atresia (underdeveloped ear canal), chronic ear infections, or those who have undergone surgery that has affected the structure of the ear.

Is a Ponto Implant Right for You?

If you struggle with conductive or mixed hearing loss, or single-sided deafness, and traditional hearing aids have not been effective, a Ponto implant may be a great solution for you. Our team of board-certified otolaryngologists will perform a thorough evaluation and guide you through every step of the process, ensuring that you receive the best possible care and hearing outcome.

How Do Ponto Implants Work?

Ponto implants use bone conduction technology to transmit sound. The system consists of a small titanium implant that is surgically placed in the bone behind the ear and a removable sound processor that attaches to the implant. The sound processor picks up sound waves from the environment and converts them into vibrations. These vibrations are transmitted through the bone directly to the inner ear, where they are interpreted as sound by the brain. This bypasses any blockages or damage in the outer or middle ear, providing clearer sound without the need to amplify sound through the ear canal.
